Tilbury Golf & Curling Club
Founded in 1969, the Tilbury Golf & Curling Club first opened for play in
1972. For the first 20 years of its existence it was a nine hole course, but in 1992 it
expanded to 18 holes. Both nines provide gently rolling fairways with a good mix of water,
sand and trees to affect play. Tilbury’Äôs undulating greens can sometimes be difficult to read
and two putting should never be taken for granted. The most challenging hole on the course is
the 10th, a 374 yard par four with a creek crossing the fairway at the 240 yard mark. If
you’Äôre a long hitter you’Äôll have to decide whether or not you wish to carry the creek with
your tee shot, or play it safe and lay up. If you can carry the creek the added distance will
come in handy on your second shot to the hole’Äôs raised, rolling green. As the members will
attest, a par here is a very good score, and birdies are so rare that some may refuse to
believe should you claim to score one. Tilbury’Äôs signature hole is the 490 yard 14th, a par
five dogleg left that plays from an elevated tee. When teeing off beware of a fairway bunker
off the right, but still try to get enough distance to clear the corner. The hole’Äôs narrow
green can make for a difficult target, especially when the pin is on the left side and tucked
in behind a green side bunker.
