Fort Macleod Golf Club
Fort Macleod holds the distinction of not only being the first golf course in
Alberta, but also the oldest layout in Canada west of Winnipeg. Golf has been played on this
land since 1890 when it was just a series of grassy flats near the old Northwest Mounted
Police Fort. Over the years many historical relics from the fort have been dug up, and some of
these are on display in the Fort Museum. As one might expect for a course over one hundred
years old, many changes have occurred to its layout. Some of the biggest improvements to the
course were the replacement of the original holes plus the installation of grass greens. Today
Fort Macleod possesses a fully mature and challenging 9 hole layout that is a delight to play.
One of its best holes is the redesigned 4th - a picturesque 173 yard par three that requires
an accurate shot from the tee to avoid trouble. Golfers must be careful to avoid an out of
bounds down the left side of the fairway and thick trees to the right. Two large traps in
front of the green and more trees to the back provide additional hazard. All in all, a great
hole on a great course.
